Some of other ladies were expressing similar thoughts and we tried to figure out why.
We realised that as we are all getting a bit older now our minds still think like our 20 year old self, however our bodies are in another astral plane. Some of the ladies were getting a bit disheartened too and considering giving up the class altogether.
It was at this point that ‘Maggie’ suggested adapting. There are always options in these types of classes, maybe it was time to try some of the softer options.
And at this point the mind can easily start a negative chatter about failure, changing, not being able to keep up. The mind may tell you that it is easier – better – to quit if it is not working.
The enlightening thing that Maggie pointed out was that it is failure if you give up the class altogether. It is courage if you recognise that the change or adaption will still enable you to reach / maintain your goal. That is to keep exercising and keep moving.
I thought that was a pretty amazing insight. It also aligns with something I had recently read. “Change your strategy if you need to, but not your intent”.
So we all stayed in the class. I have started taking some of the softer options. I still sweat, I still get a workout and I am still keeping my exercise intentions intact.
